A safe haven between four realms. The girl sworn to protect it–at any cost.
Hidden deep in the mountains of Colorado lies the Inn at Havenfall, a sanctuary that connects ancient worlds–each with their own magic–together. For generations, the inn has protected all who seek refuge within its walls, and any who disrupt the peace can never return.
For Maddie Morrow, summers at the inn are more than a chance to experience this magic first-hand. Havenfall is an escape from reality, where her mother sits on death row accused of murdering Maddie’s brother. It’s where Maddie fell in love with handsome Fiorden soldier Brekken. And it’s where one day she hopes to inherit the role of Innkeeper from her beloved uncle.
But this summer, the impossible happens–a dead body is found, shattering everything the inn stands for. With Brekken missing, her uncle gravely injured, and a dangerous creature on the loose, Maddie suddenly finds herself responsible for the safety of everyone in Havenfall. She’ll do anything to uncover the truth, even if it means working together with an alluring new staffer Taya, who seems to know more than she’s letting on. As dark secrets are revealed about the inn itself, one thing becomes clear to Maddie–no one can be trusted, and no one is safe . . .
Havenfall… Hmm.. * reads the sypoisis* OK, we’re giving a Sara Holland book another try with a fresh set of eyes.
Did I like it? The concept, yes. The storytelling? It was okay. The thing with her books is that she introduces really amazing concepts but her storyline… It starts off high at the begining. Then, it slowly goes downhill. Let’s talk about her writing, she’s a great writer, the description and visualisation is there. My only issue was the storyline. It was a miss for me in that area.
I really wanted to love this book because the sypoisis had me intrigued af!! Parallel worlds connecting to earth?? In an Inn at the mountains??? THERE’S AN OTHERWORLDLY LEGOLAS LIKE ELF???? Sign me up with popcorn pleaseeeeee.
Also, no. Legolas like elf, Brekken was introduced in the beginning, dissappears for the rest of the book only to return at the end to “Save The Day”. Couldn’t Maddie save the day herself? Well, no. She is entirely human and she’s facing other magical beings with power that can kill her without raising a finger if they want even though she is armed with weapons.
So… Why did I give it 3 stars?
It wasn’t bad enough to be 2 stars. 3 for the concept and writing and characters. What reallyyyyyy threw me off the train was how it seemed only halfway done. Like there was more the author could had done to make the plot more structured and planned instead of the whole going-with-the-flow, I’ll-drop-you-and-pick-you-up-somewhere (it happened to more than 1 character). Also the character development was… Well, since this is the first book, the author might be introducing the characters and the development might come in the 2nd book??? We shall see… I am curious to know what other readers will think of this book. BRB, reading newer reviews.
Thanks to @times.reads for sending me an ARC. This book will be available in bookstores starting 3.3.2020, LOVE THE STUNNING COVER
