House of Earth and Blood(Crescent City #1)by Sarah J. Maas, #51 review

Publication date: 3 March 2020

Bound by blood.
Tempted by desire.
Unleashed by destiny.

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life—working hard all day and partying all night—until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She’ll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose—to assassinate his boss’s enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he’s offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City’s underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion—one that could set them both free, if they’d only let it.

With unforgettable characters, sizzling romance, and page-turning suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom—and the power of love.

Thank you to @definitely.books for sending me a review copy. You can buy it in all good bookstores now, #pansing.

I think a lot of people are afraid of reviewing this book because the SJM fandom is in half. You either hate her writing or you like it. I for one am keeping an open mind to the pros and cons. I would also like to say this to all the people who can’t stand territorial aggressiveness from males: *crack knuckles* Now, they are Fae. Fae is a type of species. Like lions, they are animals, a type of species. Same applies to Fae. You don’t see people hating on lions because they are aggressively territorial about their females. Point is, they aren’t humans so it is in the Fae nature to be like that 🙂 And of course we do come across the odd black sheep in humans, those are free for you to shred into pieces. But be kind with your words always, don’t be a keyboard warrior to bully authors about their works. SJM is a writer with her own style like every other author, if she’s no for you, please leave respectfully.

Deep breath, here I go

We have a whooping 799 paged story that weighs 779 grams. It will be an arm workout. You can finally cancel that gym membership cause now you can literally workout from home, on your couch, your bed, wherever. The first half of the story will feel like it is dragging with a heck ton of information dump on the world-building, be patient. It is an urban dystopian fantasy world where you have mythical creatures using high tech phones and we have a chopper? And holy relics? And really cool architecture? And high tech equipment that is more high tech than ours? And lots, just LOTS of names of PLACES, CHARACTERS and… COURTS? The hierarchy system takes time to learn, after 200 pages, you’ll familiarize yourself with it. After that, you might feel that there are some scenes that are redundant and repetitive. There are some important hints and foreshadowing there, you will definitely miss it until it reveals itself. Then, you’ll go HOLY SHIET!!! This book ended on a high. It is a good high, Sarah ties off some knots and the devil in her created new extra tangly knots. We also get an easter egg from one of her series 🙂 Love that extra bit. Oh! OH! And also! FREAKING MAGICAL LIBRARY! There’s one in every of her series, in this book, a lot of major events happened which I love. I couldn’t ask for a better setting for significant events to take place.

It is the very foundation of this book, the spine that holds all the pages together. So much work was put into making sure the roots of friendship will weather any storms (or wars) to come. Bryce and Danika’s friendship especially. These who freaking love each other, to death. I need to bawl my eyes out at the very mention of how much the LOVE each other. Primarily at the ending. My heart couldn’t take it, thank god for the machine that kept it beeping. And it is not just with Danika. In every friendship that Bryce has, she holds them dear to her heart. She doesn’t trust easily but when she does, she trusts with all her heart.

Adult content

This is an Adult Book, for all that it is and the genre label. There is not much actual smut? Wait, so there’s no smut at all? Got. You know it is an SJM book when the characters are growling and nipping and moaning with their clothes on. There is also smut talk, aka dirty talk which is what people do when they’re kinky. It is truly adult in my opinion though. If you read her previous works, she does use curse words in the novels but they are little compared to this. I’m talking like a LOT.

Now, let’s talking about Bryce Quinlan

Bryce Queenlan, she’s a redhead, I’m wondering if that’s a nod to a certain TOG redheaded woman or to an ACOTAR Lord(s). Moving on, she’s one of those people that at first glance you’ll think “Wild Party Girl”, you’re correct. That’s one of the many sides of her. She is also a mother-effing strong independent woman needs to man to tell her she’s amazingly good at cursing and well, loving herself. This girl is basically a weed. She can survive in the harshest of lightning storms and lava too. Burn the grass away? No problem, the roots cling to the ground, it will grow with sun and water.

“The power shall always belong to those who give their lives to the city.”

This is the slowest slow burn if there ever was a slow-burn in a book. Just sayin’. I’m not going to talk about Hunt cause yall already know all the words to describe that angel. I love that they are friends before lovers. Plan down that mutual understanding of an actual person and know them before you fuck. I don’t think that counts as old school from where I live (Malaysia, we are wayyyyyyy behind). So, it may be an old school relationship for people who are used to the society of fuck first before you know the actual person.

All in all, I hope you will give her book a chance with an open mind and an open heart. Thank you for reading my review and please stay mindful during #Covid-19. God bless you, stay safe. Keep reading ❤
