Aurora Burning (The Aurora Cycle #2) by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, #71 review

Publication date : 5 May 2020

Our heroes are back… kind of. From the bestselling co-authors of the Illuminae Files comes the second book in the epic series about a squad of misfits, losers, and discipline cases who just might be the galaxy’s best hope for survival.

First, the bad news: an ancient evil—you know, your standard consume-all-life-in-the-galaxy deal—is about to be unleashed. The good news? Squad 312 is standing by to save the day. They’ve just got to take care of a few small distractions first.

Like the clan of gremps who’d like to rearrange their favorite faces.

And the cadre of illegit GIA agents with creepy flowers where their eyes used to be, who’ll stop at nothing to get their hands on Auri.

Then there’s Kal’s long-lost sister, who’s not exactly happy to see her baby brother, and has a Syldrathi army at her back. With half the known galaxy on their tails, Squad 312 has never felt so wanted.

When they learn the Hadfield has been found, it’s time to come out of hiding. Two centuries ago, the colony ship vanished, leaving Auri as its sole survivor. Now, its black box might be what saves them. But time is short, and if Auri can’t learn to master her powers as a Trigger, the squad and all their admirers are going to be deader than the Great Ultrasaur of Abraaxis IV.

Shocking revelations, bank heists, mysterious gifts, inappropriately tight bodysuits, and an epic firefight will determine the fate of the Aurora Legion’s most unforgettable heroes—and maybe the rest of the galaxy as well.

I’m sorry to say that my high expectations for Aurora Burning exploded higher than a volcano once I read the book.

Now, I am deeper in the fandom for this series, I was knee-deep before, no the sand is about to cover my head. I can only wish that the third book will be released sooner or I shall be buried alive in anticipation.

The brightest of thank yous to @times.reads for sending me a review copy. I love you.

There’s this taboo that is almost a fact that sequels to 5-star books may be a flop so put you expectations on hold, order an “I’m cool waiting for the release hasn’t killed me” (we all know it is a lie, you spent the waiting time reading books that will probably never live up to the masterful writing of the powerhouse duo of authors). When the book cover was released, I kid you not when I say I swooned like a seagull landing gracefully on water only to be eaten alive by a shark :)))) such a shame Kal does not exist in real life. This dude has an eight pack!!! *drools*

Aurora Burning continues the galactic adventure of our beloved Squad 312 that’s lovingly hunted by everyone, by every species. Nothing makes you feel fancied like your face on every holographic screen in the universe with the words “Wanted”. Everyone wants them, myself included 😉 . After Octavia, the crew is trying to lay low while helping Aurora, the Trigger to fulfil her purpose. They mess up, they make up, they be adorable to weasel their way inches away from the door of death. How do they do that???

“Poor baby,” she coos. “Madam Badass really did a number on the boys, huh?”
“I mean, I can always adopt,” he whimpers.

Here’s a quick rundown of what our heroes accomplished:

Tyler: he stands by the idealogy that he does not have any bad ideas, only less amazing ones. He also steps up as the Alpha, as if he can be any more Alpha-y. Squad first, everything else later. We also discover more about his heritage which is an explodingly huge revelation, like star exploding size.

Scarlett: Queen of Hearts with the flaming red hair to match. As the Face of the Squad, it is predicted that she is the ultimate charmer. You’re not wrong, gurl has a black belt in that field. We are used to seeing her at the unbreakable smiling presence, in this sequel, we can see Scar take up more leadership roles and even maybe a motherly like approach to her Squad.

Fin: Yes, yes, this Betraskan is still a qualified smart-ass based on his IQ as a Gearhead. The only thing new about him is his newly developed crush on a certain redhead in their crew. Not a spoiler, we ALL saw that coming based on his flirtation in Aurora Rising. In case you didn’t know, he is Bi. If he can’t have one Jones twin, he will settle for the other 😉 . As usual, he is sarcastic, you can expect a lot of jokes from him. After all, he is still Finian de Karran de Seel. That Seels the deal!

Zila: Our softspoken, scarily smart AND ice-cold iceberg has started to melt. Global warming alert, everyone! System Zila has been compromised by Squad 312. Her humanity starts to resurface as she deals with her PTSD. We learn about her backstory, we see her slowly make progress at being socially vocal and warm to others. I like how the authors didn’t turn her into a charmer overnight, they wrote her to take snail-like steps to reenter the world of conversing organically. It displays that time is needed for development.

Aurora: White streak of hair? Check. Still there. ALL HAIL our trigger, the reason this series exists in the first place. She is Asian, Chinese to be more specific. I love how the authors included a tiny nod to her culture in the book amongst the chaos. Aurora steps into her big girl shoes to take on her duty as The Trigger thanks to the help of her Squad 312, her newly found family AND of course, a boyfriend that is not Legolas. As the Trigger, she is basically the first one to press a button that will trigger a series of domino events. We can all look forward to some juicy galactical drama and complicated politics. It is a production of the century.

Kal: *double checks* YUPP, boi is still sizzling hot, you can fry an egg on him. He made a mistake. A mistake that will cost him everything. A lot is revealed about him, about why he left his family and people behind to join Aurora Rising. His relationship with Aurora also improved, they are exclusive now in Aurora Burning. Hence, his pretty face is on the cover. He has a huge role to play other than making us heart eyes okayyyy.

Saedii : The other Gilwraeth sibling. Kal’s long-lost sister has finally caught up to her brother. She has been chasing after him across the galaxy. She is known as Pixiebitch to the squad, especially Scar. This Syldrathi is the Tauriel (The Hobbit movie, female Captian of the Guard of the Elven Woodland Realm) of the Aurora Cycle series. It is only fitting since her brother, Kal is Legolas. This badass bitch with flawless olive skin and high cheekbones with dazzling violet eyes is the leader of the renegade cabal of Unbroken militants. She wants Kal to embrace the war in his blood and join the Unbroken army. Let the hunt begin.

Maker’s Breath, this sequel lives, I tell you! It burns as bright as the Sun and it will shatter hearts. I sincerely hope you will pick it up. Thank you for reading my review.
