Milly, Aubrey, and Jonah Story are cousins, but they barely know each another, and they’ve never even met their grandmother. Rich and reclusive, she disinherited their parents before they were born. So when they each receive a letter inviting them to work at her island resort for the summer, they’re surprised… and curious.
Their parents are all clear on one point—not going is not an option. This could be the opportunity to get back into Grandmother’s good graces. But when the cousins arrive on the island, it’s immediately clear that she has different plans for them. And the longer they stay, the more they realize how mysterious—and dark—their family’s past is.
The entire Story family has secrets. Whatever pulled them apart years ago isn’t over—and this summer, the cousins will learn everything.
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of One of Us Is Lying comes your next obsession. You’ll never feel the same about family again.
If you’re looking for a light read and not quite a fluff piece or an intense mystery piece, this is the book for you. If you’ve read Karen ‘s previous works like “One of Us is Lying”, please do not read this book with high expectations that it will be a thrilling crime solve. In comparison to “One of Us is Lying”, “The Cousins” is more chill and a summer island read with family secrecy. It is very family oriented and learning family again from it’s once brokenness.
‘Everybody has secrets,’ she says, taking a sip of her drink. ‘That’s nondebatable. The only question is whether you’re keeping your own, or someone else’s.The Cousins by Karen. M McManus
We follow The Story Cousins in three POVS – Aubrey, Milky and Jonah. The grandchildren of Mildred Story, richest resident of the island, basically small town royalty. Years ago, Mildred Story disinherited her three children, leaving them absolutely nothing of the Story treasure trove. One Summer, the cousins received a mysterious invitation to spend their summer at their grandmother’s resort working as interns. Pressured by their parents who were eager to get back into their mother’s good books, they got on a ferry towards the enigma in their entire lives – their grandmother. The cousins band together to unlock secrets and look after one another. However some truths are best hidden.
I recommend this book to readers who are starting out in the mystery genre and want something light to sample. This is a very chill mystery read, writing is easy to understand and solving the puzzle along with the cousins will have you baffled by the twists.
